War Memorial

Gwalchmai War Memorial 1926

War memorials were built after the First World War (1914–1918) for several important social, emotional, and political reasons:

World War I caused unprecedented casualties—around 16–20 million deaths worldwide. Many soldiers were buried overseas in places like France and Belgium, and their bodies were never returned home. Memorials gave families a place to grieve when they had no grave to visit.

The scale of loss affected entire communities. Almost every town lost young men. Memorials became public spaces where people could gather on remembrance days to reflect and support one another.

Governments and communities wanted to formally acknowledge the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers. Memorials often listed the names of local men who had died, reinforcing the idea that their sacrifice was meaningful and remembered.

After the World War II many memorials were adapted to include the names of those lost in that war as well.

Memorial clock tower built in 1926 by John Griffiths of Llangefni who also worked on other memorials in the area. The community raised a total of £506 to meet the cost of the memorial. The unavailing ceremony was on 2/7/1926. The memorial was a little later being being built than others on the island and this was acknowledged in the minutes of the Memorial Committee.

“We have been a little slow but if we have, we will build a fitting memorial. It is likely that the clock will be most beautiful and justify intention.” Mason – John Griffiths (Llangefni), Sculptor T.R. Williams (Llangefni), Moelfre quarry stone used.”

War Memorial order of service1926

The memorial has three stages; the lowest is faced with rock-faced limestone masonry (the name of the builder and date of construction incised at the SE corner); the upper stages are ashlar with chamfered angles. Each stage has a moulded cornice, the clock stage with cornice arched over each clock face; the domed cap is surmounted by a plain cross. The second stage of the tower has a rectangular commemorative plaque in the S face to the men of Gwalchmai who fell in the First World War (a shorter plaque added on the E face following the Second World War). The S face carries a wreath in bas-relief set above the memorial plaque ; other faces have narrow, elliptical-headed louvred ventilation slits. Each face of the clock stage has a circular clock face with moulded surround; entry to the workings through a narrow doorway in the rear (N) elevation

“‘Yn Angof ni Chant Fod’ Atgof serch am ddewrion Gwalchmai a’r Cylch a syrthiodd yn ( a thrwy) y Rhyfel Mawr 1914 – 1918”

They will not be forgotten’ A recollection of the bravery (of those) from Gwalchmai and District who fell in (and because of) the Great War 1914-1918″

Gwasanaeth canmlwyddiant y Gofeb 02/07/2026 Centenary Service of the Memorial

Mae aelodau Cyngor Cymuned Trewalchmai yn dymuno estyn eu diolch a’u gwerthfawrogiad diffuant i bawb a fu’n bresennol ac a gymerodd ran yng Ngwasanaeth Canmlwyddiant y Gofeb a’r Cloc ar 2 Gorffennaf 2026. Roedd yn wir yn achlysur arbennig a fydd yn aros yng nghof llawer ohonom am flynyddoedd i ddod.

Diolch arbennig i Hwylusydd y dydd, y Cynghorydd Nev Evans, am arwain y gwasanaeth teimladwy mewn modd mor urddasol ac effeithiol. Diolch hefyd i’r Parchedig Hybarch Emyr W. Rowlands am ei anerchiad ysbrydoledig ac am arwain y Ddeddf Goffa gerbron y Gofeb.

Uchafbwynt y dydd i lawer oedd y ddwy gân a gyflwynwyd gan ddisgyblion Ysgol y Ffridd. Roedd yr ail gân, “Can y Cloc”, a gyfansoddwyd yn arbennig ar gyfer yr achlysur gan Catrin Angharad Jones, yn gwbl addas, gyda’r geiriau a’r alaw yn ategu ei gilydd yn berffaith. Roedd hefyd yn gyffrous clywed y plant yn darllen enwau ac oedrannau pob un o’r rhai a gofir ar y Cloc, a roddodd eu bywydau yn ystod y ddau Ryfel Byd.

Diolch hefyd i Mrs Edna Jones, y Cynghorydd Douggie Fowlie a chynrychiolydd o’r Llu Awyr Brenhinol am eu darlleniadau.

Hoffem hefyd estyn ein diolch i Hogia Bodwrog a’r Cynghorydd Arfon Wyn am eu cyfraniadau cerddorol arbennig, a ychwanegodd gymaint at awyrgylch y diwrnod.

Roedd yn fraint cael croesawu ein Prif Weinidog, Rhun ap Iorwerth, a oedd yn bresennol ar ddechrau’r gwasanaeth, ynghyd â Llinos Medi AS, Gari Pritchard, Arweinydd Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn, Dafydd Thomas, Cadeirydd y Cyngor, a nifer o aelodau etholedig eraill. Diolch hefyd i gynrychiolwyr y Lleng Brydeinig Frenhinol, y Môr-gadetiaid o Gaergybi, ac i’r Bwglwr am gymryd rhan yn y seremoni.

Yn dilyn y gwasanaeth yn y Capel a’r Ddeddf Goffa gerbron y Cloc, aeth nifer fawr ymlaen i Ganolfan yr Henoed i fwynhau’r lluniaeth. Diolch o galon i’r Merched am baratoi a gweini te prynhawn bendigedig.

Diolch hefyd i Is-bwyllgor y Cyngor Cymuned a’r Clerc am eu holl waith yn trefnu’r achlysur, i Gapel Moriah (A) am ganiatáu cynnal y gwasanaeth, ac i Ofalwr Canolfan yr Henoed am ei gymorth parod. Diolch hefyd i’r Pennaeth, y staff a holl ddisgyblion Ysgol y Ffridd, ac i Catrin Angharad Jones am ei chyfeiliant medrus ar y piano.

Roedd presenoldeb yr Heddlu yn allweddol wrth sicrhau na fu’r traffig yn amharu ar y digwyddiad, ac rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn am eu cefnogaeth.

I nodi’r achlysur, gosodwyd Capsiwl Amser y tu mewn i’r Cloc gan ddisgyblion Ysgol y Ffridd. Bydd y sawl a fydd yn ei agor ymhen can mlynedd yn dod o hyd i gasgliad o eitemau cyfoes, gan gynnwys cof USB sy’n cynnwys hanes pentref Gwalchmai, ynghyd â nifer o eitemau eraill sy’n adlewyrchu’r cyfnod presennol. Diolch hefyd i Mr Owen Evans, y person hynaf a anwyd yng Ngwalchmai, sydd bellach yn 101 oed, am gyfrannu eitemau i’r capsiwl.

Diolch unwaith eto i bawb a gyfrannodd, a fu’n bresennol ac a helpodd i wneud y diwrnod yn llwyddiant ysgubol ac yn achlysur gwirioneddol gofiadwy.

Members of Trewalchmai Community Council wish to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all who attended and took part in the Centenary Service of the Memorial / Clock on 2.7.26. It really was an event that will stay in the memory of many for a very long time.

A special thank you to the day’s Facilitator, Councillor Nev Evans, for leading the highly moving Service in such an effective manner. Thanks also to Venerable Emyr.W. Rowlands for his address and for leading the Act of Remembrance in front of the Memorial.

The highlight of the day for many were the two songs performed by pupils from Ysgol Y Ffridd. The second song ‘Can Y Cloc’ composed eapecially for the day by Catrin Angharad Jones was extremely appropriate, with the lyrics and melody complementing perfectly. In addition, many in attendance appreciated that the children had read the names and ages of each individual on the clock as a result of their sacrifice in both World Wars.

Thanks also to Mrs Edna Jones, Councillor Douggie Fowlie and a Royal Air Force Representative for the readings.
We would also like to extend our thanks to Hogia Bodwrog and Councillor Arfon Wyn for their lovely songs.

It was also a pleasure to have our First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth who was present at the start, as well as Llinos Medi MP, Gari Pritchard, Leader of the Isle of Anglesey County Council, Dafydd Thomas, Chair of the Council and several other elected members. Thanks to a representation of the British Legion and the Sea Cadets from Holyhead for their attendance and to the Bugler.
Following the Service in the Chapel and the Act of Remembrance in front of the clock, many attended the refreshments at the ‘Canolfan yr Henoed’. A huge thank you to the ‘Ladies’ for preparing and serving a wonderful afternoon tea.
Thanks to the Community Council Sub-Committee and the Clerk for organising the day, to Moriah Chapel (A) for allowing the service to be held, and to the Caretaker of ‘Canolfan yr Henoed’ for his assistance. Thank you also to the Headteacher, Staff, all the pupils of Ysgol y Ffridd and Catrin Angharad Jones on the piano.

The presence of the Police was also key to ensuring that the traffic did not disrupt the event, and was greatly appreciated.
To commemorate the day, a Time Capsule was placed inside the clock by Ysgol y Ffridd pupils. Whoever opens it in another hundred years will find a number of contemporary items which include a USB containing the history of the village of Gwalchmai and several other items. Thanks also to Mr Owen Evans as the oldest person born in Gwalchmai (101 years old) for donating items for the capsule.

Thank you again to everyone for contributing , attending and ensuring that the day was such a success and memorable.
